Tax Accountant duties and responsibilities

The role of a Tax Accountant covers a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Interacting with other finance team members to gather tax-related information
  • Preparing and reviewing corporate tax returns as well as tax returns for related entities
  • Advising on corporate tax matters
  • Resolving tax-related problems
  • Making recommendations for improved tax management
  • Reporting to the finance team on cashflow planning for tax remittances
  • Responding to any external tax queries

Tax Accountant qualifications and requirements

It is highly desirable for a Tax Accountant to hold a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in:

  • Accounting
  • Business studies

Additional accounting qualifications to consider include JICPA (Japan Institute of Certified Public Accountants) and CPTA Japan (Certified Public Tax Accountant Japan).

A Tax Accountant should also have the following personal skills and experience

  • Three or more years of tax compliance experience
  • A good understanding of Japanese Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (JGAAP), US GAAP, or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
  • Excellent knowledge of Japanese tax law
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Professionalism, integrity and trustworthiness
  • Willingness to remain up to date on Japanese and international tax matters
  • Excellent Japanese and English business language skills – both spoken and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills to liaise with other members of the finance team
